For this reason, and the six others listed below, I propose we focus not on how to get out of the friend zone, but on why we should stop using the term altogether, effectively banishing the Friend Zone to, well, the Friend Zone. Since the term was first coined in a 1994 episode of “Friendswhere Joey refers to a lovelorn Ross as the “mayor of the friend zone,” it has evolved into a catch-all term for unrequited sexual interest, generating countless memes, a Chris Rock standup routine and an eponymous MTV reality dating show.
Considering the incredibly brief shelf lives of most such pop-culture tropes, it’s shocking that the “friend zone” has lingered for so long in the cultural imagination, in the form of memes that range from vaguely amusing to harmlessly whiny to breathtakingly offensive (an image of a sloth whispering in a woman’s ear, with the caption “She put me in the Friend Zone/I put her in the rape zone”).
You may get really close to a girl with all the hopes of getting into her pants, but somewhere along the way, you may have taken a few detours that led you right into the friend zone.
[Read: How to tell a girl you love her without losing her] What is a friend zone? It’s a place where she and a guy can sit together and talk about anything and get real friendly with each other.
And you want to have sex with her when you feel and see this, right? You can tease her for being a nerd (push), but you can also tell her you want to see her again (pull). Imagine three scenarios after you ask her out: • She thinks you’re weird and never wants to talk to you again • She says no, and you remain friends • She says yes, and becomes your girlfriend Think the first scenario is scary? Hell, you might not even care about her at this point because you’re off doing cool shit.
Leading the interaction means that you are in control of the situations. In my opinion, if a girl thinks you’re creepy or weird, or freaks out in this situation, she was a pretty bad friend to begin with. However, when she does come back in, she will see how much fun you’re having and will (hopefully) want to be part of it.
Do you go shopping together, or Gchat into the wee hours of the night, or post Buzz Feed listicles on each other’s walls with the comment “hahaha so true ;-)”?
